ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Dec. 3, 2014) The following statement can be attributed to National PTA President Otha Thornton:

“National PTA is deeply saddened to learn of the collision involving two school buses in Knoxville, Tenn. The Association extends its deepest sympathies and full support to the students, families, teachers and administrators impacted by this accident.

“As America’s oldest and largest child advocacy association, it is a top priority of National PTA to work with administrators and local, state and federal lawmakers to ensure the safety of all children during the school day and while traveling to and from school. Our mission, following this type of tragedy, simply becomes that much more important.

“This accident brings to the forefront the need for families, teachers, administrators, community leaders and elected officials to come together to find the most effective ways to ensure that all children get to and from school safely. National PTA is committed to assisting families, schools and communities in preventing such tragedies and keeping all children safe.

“National PTA stands with Tennessee PTA and the PTAs at Sunnyview Primary School and Chilhowee Intermediate School in their efforts to support the students, families and educators affected.”
