Voting Credentials Questions

Why Electronic Voting?
Electronic voting streamlines and simplifies the voting process.

If you are selected as a voting delegate from your state or National PTA to vote at convention, you will be issued two items when you check in at registration: a keypad card and a voting card. You will exchange the keypad card for a keypad electronic device as you enter general sessions. Operation of the device and instruction on how to vote during business sessions and elections will be given by the presiding officer during the general meetings. The other card—the voting card—will be used for some simple votes at the discretion of the presiding officer. Remember to have both cards with you as you enter general meetings.

What is a “voting delegate”?
While anyone can attend and enjoy the 2017 National PTA Convention & Expo, only voting delegates have the ability to vote during business sessions and elections. National PTA Bylaws define the voting delegate body. Some voting delegates are named directly from National PTA by virtue of their position in the National PTA governance structure. However, most voting delegates are named by state PTAs in accordance with state PTA bylaws and policies. Only PTA members can vote during convention. Members who are interested in becoming a voting delegate should contact their state PTA office to inquire about receiving voting credentials.

How many voting delegates are allowed from each state?
The number of voting delegates is based on state membership and delegates are selected in accordance with the bylaws of each state PTA. Contact your state office to inquire about receiving voting credentials.

How do I get my voting credential card?
There are no credential cards. Upon registration, you will be told if you have been given voting delegate status. If you receive this status, you will be issued voting cards at the credential desk located in the registration area. If you do not have the status and wish to vote, the credential desk staff will explain the process for gaining voting delegate status onsite. Please be sure to carry your PTA membership card to identify you as a member.

Can convention costs be covered by my PTA budget?
Convention registration fees and travel costs are legitimate expenses that can be included in your PTA budget. Many PTAs budget to attend convention every year. While other organizations charge thousands of dollars for a 4-day conference like ours—we keep registration fees low to allow as many PTA leaders as possible to attend. This is just one way National PTA invests in its members and volunteer leaders. By seeking sponsors and outside funding to defray the costs of convention, we can keep early registration fees as low as $250 per member (and as low as $190 if you register early with a group from your local unit).
