Candidate Narrative
Is there anything more important than membership growth? I believe there is. Membership retention. Retention measures whether we’re delivering the results current members are looking for. Returning members give us insights into the value they find in their ongoing membership, help us gain insights into how to create added value for members, and how to scale membership in the future. Once we stop membership loss, we can truly begin to grow membership. One of the most effective ways to keep members committed is by helping PTA boards at every level achieve their goals. The Membership Committee is a key component of this process, and its ‘VP’ wears two hats; officer and chair.
From an officer’s perspective, membership retention/growth is a multilayered challenge. Here’s one. PTA offers incredible benefits, tools, and resources that can be utilized by every member. But if members don’t know of them or use them, their value is invisible. If people don’t see value in being a member, they won’t join. As VP of Membership, I will work with committee members, staff, and other NPTA committees to deliver consistent messaging that PTA is fresh, current, advocating for all children, and worth sticking with.
As VP of Membership, I see the committee’s role, in simplistic terms, as a blend of customer service reps and cheerleaders. We create strong customer experiences through proactive outreach and engagement and consistently acknowledge the valuable work and commitment each State Membership Lead invests in PTA. Encouraging them through the rough times and celebrating their successes are vital to how positively they view their roles. When they succeed, all of PTA benefits.
Having served on the Membership Committee I understand these challenges, the time commitment, and responsibility required for this position. I’d be honored to serve as your next VP of Membership. Thank you.
