Candidate Narrative

Debbie Kilpatrick

Candidate for Nominating and Leadership Recruitment Committee

I have been fortunate to learn valuable lessons and gain extensive experiences in my professional career, working with community organizations, and serving in various positions at multiple levels of PTA.  These experiences and knowledge support the PTA mission and the goals of the NLRC.

Through my community and PTA leadership roles, I have been able to identify strengths and skill sets of volunteers to match specific positions.  Recruiting, mentoring, and encouraging leaders to follow PTA career pathways has come naturally as I empower volunteers to become successful leaders and to understand their service is greatly valued. These traits can contribute to successful NLRC teams.

During my career, I have always strived to lead with honesty, compassion, encouragement, support, and with gratitude to all.  Having served in the US Army, as a public education substitute teacher, being employed in a church, volunteering with community organizations and non-profit boards, and being engaged with PTA has given me a strong foundation of service to others.  My priorities are to my family, faith in those around me, to honor the military, advocate for families, support our community partners, and to share the value of PTA membership and increase leadership capacity.  Having well rounded life experiences can build a strong NLRC team.

Northern Virginia is diverse with families from hundreds of cultures and students that have various needs, including special education services and mental health supports. As a former Fairfax County Council PTA President and past NOVA District PTA Director, supporting 225 PTAs, I have organized programs and events to celebrate our rich diversity, support student and family needs, and engage our local PTAs. These efforts are key in bringing communities together especially during these challenging times.  I hope you will trust in my ability and dedication to serve on NLRC.
