Notes from the Backpack Podcast

ECIF Leadership Series

At the 2016 National Convention, National PTA adopted a resolution on the recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ) Individuals as a Protected Class. The resolution calls for federal policies that specifically protect LGBTQ youth and local practices that create and maintain safe, affirming and inclusive learning environments for all students.

In light of this, National PTA has established a partnership with The Human Rights Campaign to develop resources to help our members better understand how to support and welcome students and families from the LGBTQ community.

Embracing Family Diversity: Welcoming LGBTQ Families
Family Engagement in children’s education allows kids to perform better in school, and navigate more easily some of the challenges of growing up, such as bullying. Today’s PTA is the vehicle through which engaged parents can accomplish great things for their children and ensure their overall success. In order to create inclusive PTAs which welcome all families, family diversity must be taken into consideration. How can your PTA create a welcoming culture for all families?

Supporting LGBTQ Students: Bullying Prevention
Bullying can happen anywhere and to anyone. However, depending on the environment, certain groups—such as LGBTQ students and students who are perceived to be LGBTQ—are at a greater risk of being bullied. Creating a supportive school climate for LGBTQ students improves educational outcomes for all students. Attendees will gain an understanding of how to best support LGBTQ students and reduce their risk of being bullied, as well as ways to advocate for all students.
