Whereas, Youth fire setting is a serious threat to public safety that may result in property damage, injury and/or death; and

Whereas, Novelty lighters are dangerous and attractive to children because of designs and features that include cartoon characters, toys, visual effects, flashing lights, music and sounds; and

Whereas, Many public safety agencies with experts in the field of fire safety, including the National Fire Protection Agency, National Volunteer Fire Council, and National Association of State Fire Marshals, support prohibiting the sale and distribution of novelty lighters; therefore be it

Resolved, That PTA and its constituent organizations promote education on the threat to public safety from youth fire setters and novelty lighters, and be it further

Resolved, That PTA and its constituent organizations support legislative and regulatory action banning or restricting the sale of novelty lighters.
