Association urges successful and equitable implementation of the law to ensure all children are protected

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (June 27, 2022)—Last Friday, Congress passed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and Saturday, President Joe Biden signed the bill into law. National PTA President Anna King issued the following statement on the bill:

“National PTA commends Congress for coming together and passing and President Biden for swiftly signing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. For so many years, we have called for action and sensible gun safety and violence prevention policies that will make our schools and communities safer and save lives. This legislation is a significant step forward in addressing the school safety and gun violence epidemic our country has endured for far too long, and particularly in the wake of the horrific shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

“Specifically, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act:

  • Invests in community violence intervention and crisis intervention programs;
  • Strengthens the federal background checks process and enhances background checks for buyers under 21;
  • Supports state red flag laws; and
  • Expands access to mental health services for children and families.

“With the enactment of the law, it is now time for all of us to work together at the federal, state and local levels to make certain that all children are protected and ensure our schools are safe, supportive and welcoming for all students.

“PTA members across the country have played a critical role in advocating for common sense solutions to gun violence, and we are committed to supporting the successful and equitable implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on the ground. It remains a top priority of our association to prevent and eliminate gun violence, promote the safety and well-being of all children, and ensure every child has every opportunity to reach their full potential.”
