ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Jan. 24, 2022)–National PTA President Anna King and Free State PTA President Marla Posey-Moss issued the following statement on the school shooting in Rockville, (Montgomery County), Md.:

“Our hearts are with the young male student who was shot in the bathroom at Magruder High School last Friday and we hope he is able to recover soon. Our thoughts are with the students, families, teachers and staff who no doubt feel their school is no longer a safe place. We commend law enforcement officers and school officials for doing their best to calm the situation and protect our children, and we are thankful that the student victim is now in stable condition.

“Our students continue to face immense fear and confusion during these tragic events. January is not even over, and we’ve already had at least five school shootings this year. PTA deplores gun violence of any kind, and we stand firm in our commitment to promote resources and supports for youth victims and survivors of violent crimes. We must all play a role and work together to help children address how to channel their anger and resolve problems in a positive and productive manner.

“National PTA and Free State PTA will continue to urge Congress to take heed and address the severe gun and school safety issues we are facing as a country. We need and expect immediate change; our children's lives depend on it. We cannot afford to lose their promise or potential. For those in need of mental health support during this time, visit PTA.org/HealthyMinds for free resources.”
