ALEXANDRIA, Va., (Dec. 15, 2021)—National PTA President Anna King and Kentucky PTA President Kathy Smiley issued the following statement on the recent devastating tornadoes:

“The tornado system that moved through the central and southern part of the country this past weekend has left over 100 people—including children—presumed dead, injured or unaccounted for, and thousands more having lost their homes and businesses. The most devastating loss has been in Kentucky.

"This was an unexpected and extremely tragic event. While so many of us watched the storms unfold on the news, it pales in comparison to the reality of loss and uncertainty these communities are experiencing. We are heartbroken to hear that the youngest victim of these storms is a two-month-old girl.

"As the nation's oldest and largest child advocacy association, National PTA provides resources to families, schools and communities across the country. We know that this will be a particularly difficult time for the children and families impacted by this natural disaster, given that it’s the holiday season. We are dedicated to supporting these states and PTA communities as they work to rebuild and heal.

“We strongly encourage everyone who can to donate to our Disaster Relief Fund, which was established to help PTA communities respond to tragedies that disrupt students' lives and their education. This fund provides emergency support to state PTAs for the benefit of local PTAs as well as school communities not affiliated with PTA.

Grants of $500 are available to local PTAs/PTSAs and grants of $100 are available to school communities not affiliated with PTA. Funds will be immediately released to the state PTA upon authorization and the state PTA will ensure distribution to the school beneficiary.

“In January, Kentucky PTA will be sending school supplies to districts in need. Monetary donations can be given here and materials like school supplies, totes, batteries and flashlights can be sent here:
