Grants support STEM + Families initiative to increase student access to hands-on STEM experiences

ALEXANDRIA, Va., (March 28, 2018)—National PTA is pleased to award 35 PTAs and schools with $1,000 grants to engage families together in technology education. These tech grants are part of the association’s STEM + Families initiative, through support from Microsoft.

“Families play a critical role in children’s academic success and have the biggest influence on children’s educational and career decisions,” said Jim Accomando, president of National PTA. “We are pleased to offer PTAs and schools resources to engage families in technology education, which is essential to bridge the STEM gap and help all children realize their fullest potential.”

With the grants, PTAs and schools will:

  • Engage families in a tech night featuring a hands-on STEM learning activity.
  • Educate families about STEM—particularly technology—careers and empower them to support their children’s success in STEM.
  • Connect families and students to technology enrichment opportunities.

STEM + Families is a national effort to engage entire families in STEM experiences at school, at home and in the community to support students’ success in STEM. The goal of the initiative is to spark an interest in STEM education, inspire families and communities to explore STEM education and career opportunities, and engage family members in shared learning experiences.

“STEM jobs in the United States are growing twice as fast as other fields,” said Nathan R. Monell, CAE, National PTA executive director. “To meet the demand for STEM professionals, develop the next generation of leaders and ensure the long-term economic success of our nation, families must be included as meaningful partners in STEM education and career pathways.”

National PTA announced the grant recipients live on Facebook. Visit National PTA’s Facebook page to view the video.
