Events to kick off on February 17 in honor of PTA Founders’ Day

ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Feb. 14, 2014) — In an effort to expand and enhance family engagement in education, PTAs and schools across the country will be hosting a variety of events from Feb. 17 through 21 as part of PTA Take Your Family to School Week. The weeklong initiative is designed to spotlight the importance of family-school partnerships, and this year, incorporates the theme “Supporting Student Success.” The timing of the week honors the day PTA was founded: Feb. 17, 1897.

“Decades of research shows that when families and schools work together, student achievement increases, schools improve and communities grow stronger,” said Otha Thornton, National PTA President. “PTA Take Your Family to School Week is a reminder during the middle of the school year of the importance of family involvement in education. Whether attending a meeting or participating in an event, the purpose of the week is to provide families the opportunity to visit their child’s school and meet school staff and inspire them to stay involved in their child’s education.”

Throughout the week, PTAs and schools will host family-focused events with an emphasis on the theme, including addressing risks associated with high school drop-out, preventing bullying, increasing arts participation, and improving literacy and math skills. The initiative is sponsored by the AXA Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AXA in the U.S., and a Proud National Sponsor of PTA.

“AXA is all about helping people build more secure futures,” said Faith Frank, president of the AXA Foundation. “PTA Take Your Family to School Week’s focus on promoting student success is a natural fit with that mission.”

In recognition of their efforts to improve family engagement, National PTA and AXA Foundation awarded grants to 51 local PTAs across the country to support their participation in PTA Take Your Family to School Week. National PTA also launched a digital toolkit to empower PTA leaders, teachers and administrators with resources to host family events and help build family-school partnerships.

PTA Take Your Family to School Week reinforces PTA’s legacy and mission to promote children’s educational success and health and well-being through strong family involvement.
