National PTA and U.S. Department of Education to Honor Students for Making the World a Better Place through the Arts

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, National PTA and the U.S. Department of Education will host a ceremony to recognize students from across the country for their efforts to make the world a better place through the arts. The event will feature music and dance performances and an exhibit of artwork created by honorees of the 2014-2015 National PTA Reflections program, themed “The World Would Be a Better Place If…” The celebration will take place in the LBJ Education Building at the U.S. Department of Education in Washington, DC.

Jane Chu, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, will keynote the event and will discuss the importance of the arts and advancing arts education. Attendees also will hear from U.S. Under Secretary of Education Ted Mitchell, National PTA President Laura Bay and National PTA Executive Director Nathan R. Monell.

The National PTA Reflections program encourages students of all ages to explore the arts in an educational way. Through the program, National PTA and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice—dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts—reflecting on the annual theme. There also is a special artist division to provide all students the opportunity to participate in the program. Submissions are reviewed by arts and education experts, and students are recognized for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life.

For nearly 50 years, the National PTA Reflections program has inspired millions of students to explore their talents and be involved in the arts by creating works for fun and recognition.
