ALEXANDRIA, VA. (February 27, 2012)The following statements can be attributed to National PTA® President Betsy Landers:

National PTA extends its deepest sympathies to those students and families affected by the tragic shooting at Chardon High School in Chardon, Ohio today.  We, as a nation, have seen far too many of these tragedies, the effects of which extend far beyond the individual communities.

All students and their families feel the fear and apprehension created by these tragic circumstances.  We all share in the sense of loss and hurt.

One of PTA’s basic tenets is that school safety is crucial to effective learning. One way to help keep schools safe is to prevent bullying by educating children and families on how to deal with bullying situations.

National PTA has many resources to assist students, parents, schools and PTAs in bullying prevention. The resources are downloadable at

National PTA believes the protection of children in all school settings is a fundamental right and has made this the utmost priority for our work and advocacy.
