ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Sept. 20, 2017)–National PTA President Jim Accomando issued the following statement regarding Hurricane Maria:
“National PTA extends our thoughts and prayers to the PTA congresses in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and all of the children, families, teachers, schools and communities in the path of Hurricane Maria. We are deeply concerned for everyone affected by this powerful storm.
“As the nation’s oldest and largest child advocacy association, it is our duty to support families and school communities in their efforts to rebuild and recover. Due to the geographic location of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, the difficulty in accessing the islands from the outside, and the devastation already inflicted by Hurricane Irma, our support is needed now more than ever.
“National PTA continues to urge everyone to donate to our association’s Disaster Relief Fund, which was established to respond to tragedies that grievously disrupt a school or education system. National PTA’s Disaster Relief Fund is expected to be fully depleted by our support of schools impacted by Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Due to the depletion, the continued need for support in Florida following Hurricane Irma and the unique challenges Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands face, the need to give has never been greater. We know we can count on our PTA members across the country to help replenish the fund to meet the emerging needs caused by Hurricane Maria.
“PTA members work hard every day to give our children and school communities what they need to thrive. Our mission, following events like the recent hurricanes, becomes that much more important. We remain committed to doing everything we can to assist those impacted by this unprecedented hurricane season and help restore communities and learning environments as quickly as possible.”
