U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to speak to attendees about the important role PTA leaders play in helping to ensure all children have access to nutritious food options
As part of its commitment to take action for the education, health and welfare of all children, National PTA will host its 2014 Legislative Conference from March 11-13 in Arlington, Va. Hundreds of parent leaders from across the country will be in attendance. The conference is designed to provide them an in-depth look at National PTA’s public policy priorities and inspire and empower parents to advocate and make a difference for our nation’s children.
U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack will keynote the event and speak to attendees about the important role PTA leaders play in helping schools implement improved meal offerings. In 2010, Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which directed the U.S. Department of Agriculture to improve the nation’s child nutrition programs. For the 2014-2015 school year, schools will be making updates to serve healthier options to students during the school day, including in a la carte lines, vending machines and school stores.
In addition to hearing from Secretary Vilsack, attendees will participate in interactive workshops and skill-building trainings on a variety of topics, including juvenile justice and delinquency prevention, early childhood education and ESEA-NCLB reauthorization and family engagement. They also will meet with Congressional leaders to discuss key issues impacting our nation’s children.
During the conference, National PTA will recognize Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL) with its 2014 Congressional Voice for Children Award. The association also will honor the recipients of its 2014 Outstanding Advocacy Awards.
