National PTA and U.S. Department of Education to Recognize Student Artists From Across the Country

Event to feature performances and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open exhibit of student artwork

WHAT:

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, National PTA and the U.S. Department of Education will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the LBJ Education Building to recognize student artists from across the country and celebrate the opening of an exhibit of their artwork. The event will feature music and dance performances by honorees of the 2013-2014 National PTA Reflections program. Robert L. Lynch, president and CEO of Americans for the Arts, will keynote the event and discuss the significance of the arts and the importance of advancing arts education. Attendees also will hear from U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and National PTA President Otha Thornton.

The National PTA Reflections program was developed to encourage students of all ages to explore the arts in an educational way. Through the program, National PTA and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice—dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts—reflecting on a specific theme. There also is a special artist division to provide all students the opportunity to participate in the program. Submissions are reviewed by experts in visual, literary and performing arts, and students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way that is personal and meaningful. For more than 45 years, the National PTA Reflections program has inspired millions of students to explore their talents and be involved in the arts by creating works for fun and recognition.

All of the artwork that will be on display in the LBJ Education Building was created by participants in the 2013-2014 National PTA Reflections program, themed “Believe, Dream, Inspire.”  The artwork will be on display for public viewing through the end of February 2015.
