ALEXANDRIA, Va., (March 29, 2016) — National PTA and LifeLock, Inc. (NYSE: LOCK), have named the Buckley family of Pearce, Ariz. the winner of The Smart Talk Giveaway. With children getting devices as early as nine or 10 years old, The Smart Talk Giveaway was part of a national effort to encourage families to have conversations about technology use and online safety to help build the next generation of digital citizens. The Buckley family was selected as the winner of the sweepstakes from among nearly 10 thousand entrants across the country.
“Technology is playing an ever-increasing role in families and children’s lives. It is essential that families talk about the importance of being responsible and safe in the increasingly digital world and show kids that the rules of life also apply online,” said Laura Bay, president of National PTA. “National PTA applauds all of the families who participated in The Smart Talk Giveaway and have had conversations about online safety and responsibility. We are pleased to name the Buckley family the winner of the sweepstakes.”
Last fall, LifeLock and National PTA launched The Smart Talk—a free digital tool designed to empower families to have an open, ongoing dialogue about the use of the Internet and devices and help them make smarter, safer choices online. The tool provides an interactive experience that guides parents and kids through a series of questions and conversations about topics such as safety and privacy, screen time, social media, apps and downloads, texting and calling, reputation and respect, and online videos and cameras. After agreeing on healthy limits together, they can create a personalized family agreement to post in their home as a reminder.
As the winner of The Smart Talk Giveaway, the Buckley family has been awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Disney World this summer.
”We’re committed to helping kids acquire the skills they need to stay safe online,” said Hilary Schneider, chief executive officer and president of LifeLock. “With The Smart Talk, parents and children set ground rules together about behavior related to technology devices. It’s a win for the whole family.”
In addition to recognizing the winner of The Smart Talk Giveaway, National PTA and LifeLock have awarded a total of $10,000 to Florida PTA, Ohio PTA, Arizona PTA and Wisconsin PTA for their efforts to encourage families to have The Smart Talk and set technology ground rules.
“As parents, we want our children to learn and have fun through technology, and at the same time, stay safe and develop healthy lifestyles,” said Nathan R. Monell, CAE, National PTA executive director. “The Smart Talk gives families a roadmap to help children build good digital habits and ensure they have the skills they need to be responsible. We’re thrilled to recognize Florida PTA, Ohio PTA, Arizona PTA and Wisconsin PTA for encouraging families in their states to invest in their online well-being by having The Smart Talk.”
