ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Sept. 16, 2014) — The following statement can be attributed to National PTA President Otha Thornton:
National PTA is saddened to learn of the shootings today at Fern Creek Traditional High School in Louisville, Ky., and Albemarle High School in Albemarle, N.C.
While the facts are still being gathered in both incidents, any act of violence at a school is intolerable. It has been, and remains, a top priority of National PTA to prevent and eliminate violence in schools, to promote safety for children and improve education.
The association monitors, supports and advocates for laws and programs at all levels in the areas of safety, juvenile justice and violence prevention. It is critical that we all work together to find the most effective ways to ensure that all students have a safe environment in which to thrive and learn.
