October 30 designated “Accion por la Educación!” to raise awareness of the Common Core State Standards in the Hispanic community
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (Oct. 30, 2013)—National PTA® has partnered with Univision Communications Inc. to support its comprehensive, multi-platform initiative, Univision Educación, aimed at increasing high school graduation rates, college readiness and college completion among Hispanic students and engaging Hispanic families and the broader community in these efforts. As part of the initiative, Oct. 30 has been designated Accion por la Educación! (Action for Education!) to raise awareness of the Common Core State Standards among the Hispanic community.
“National PTA has played a leading role in educating families and communities about the Common Core State Standards and is committed to supporting them every step of the way as states transition to the standards,” said Otha Thornton, National PTA President. “Raising awareness and increasing understanding of the Common Core State Standards remains a high priority. We are pleased to partner with Univision to support its Accion por la Educación! initiative to help engage Hispanic families and the community, ensure they are knowledgeable about the Common Core State Standards, and ensure Hispanic students graduate college and career ready.”
To help educate families about the Common Core State Standards, National PTA has developed a wide variety of tools and resources, including the Parent’s Guide to Student Success. The grade-by-grade guide explains the standards and key items that children should be learning in English and math, features activities parents can do at home to support their child’s learning, and highlights questions parents can ask their child’s teacher. The guide is available to families in Spanish through the website at www.eselmomento.com.
Through a variety of activities on Oct. 30 and continuing throughout the year, National PTA and Univision will work together to raise awareness and increase understanding of the Common Core State Standards, as well as other educational issues of critical importance to the Hispanic community.
