National PTA Reflections is America’s oldest and largest arts education program of its kind. The program was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork.
Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through film production, dance choreography, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. The 2013-2014 Reflections program theme is “Believe, Dream, Inspire.”
All students must follow the general participation rules, as well as rules for each arts category listed above. For all forms and guidelines contact your state PTA.
In 2012, the Special Artist Division emerged as an optional division for students whose physical, cognitive, or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. Contact your state PTA regarding state availability, guidelines and rules.
How to Get Involved
As a Reflections leader, you will play a critical role in helping students to explore the arts. Students who participate in the Reflections program may not recognize themselves as artists when they sign up--but they will by the end of the Reflections celebrations!
Any active PTA/PTSA in good standing with its state has the ability to implement a Reflections program. Whether there is no parent group activity at your school now, or your existing parent group wants to realize all the benefits of PTA membership, we encourage you to contact National PTA at email@example.com or (800) 307-4PTA (4782) and we will help you get your program underway.
Your State PTA has specific guidelines and deadlines, as well as a step-by-step Local PTA/PTSA Leader Reflections Guide that streamlines the whole process. They may also have training and networking opportunities for you to learn from other PTAs involved in Reflections. Download your Reflections Leader's Toolkit and Contact your State PTA today!
