Support Sandy Hook PTA & Share School Safety Resources
On Friday, December 14, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., experienced a violent shooting that resulted in nearly 30 deaths. National PTA® issued a statement to express sympathy for the students, families and communities affected by the horrendous tragedy. School and child safety is one of PTA’s core tenets as it is crucial to effective learning. National PTA® believes the protection of children in all school settings is a fundamental right and has made this the utmost priority for our work and advocacy.
In the wake of December 14, the Sandy Hook School PTA Executive Board met with the Connecticut PTSA leadership to determine how to handle the donations that had already begun to pour in from schools, community groups, families and fellow parent / teacher organizations. To simplify and consolidate donations for Sandy Hook School, the Connecticut PTSA set up the Sandy Hook Fund.
All monies collected through the Sandy Hook Fund would be used in accordance with both the donors’ intent, which was to help the Sandy Hook School community heal, and the PTA’s purpose, which is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities. The Sandy Hook Fund was dissolved in the fall of 2013, and all monies collected were transferred to a new entity, the Sandy Hook School Foundation, Inc.
The Sandy Hook School Foundation, Inc. supports programs, resources and enrichment that can make a long term difference in the lives of SHS students, while promoting the wellbeing of the SHS staff and families who were affected by 12/14. The SHS Foundation fills a gap with its broader focus on the long term health – emotional, mental and physical – of the SHS community.
The SHS Foundation, Inc. was created in the fall of 2013 as a nonprofit organization to distinguish itself from the Sandy Hook School PTA operating budget while still aligning with the PTA's core mission. The SHS Foundation's Board of Directors is comprised of Sandy Hook School parents, current PTA Executive Board members, school administrators and Newtown community leaders.
