ALEXANDRIA, Va., (May 13, 2016) — The following statement can be attributed to National PTA President Laura Bay:
“Today, the U.S. Departments of Education and Justice released guidance on public schools and districts’ obligations under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (Title IX) regarding a student’s gender identity. Title IX and its implementing regulations prohibit sex-based discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities. According to the guidance, this means that a school must not treat a transgender student differently from the way it treats other students of the same gender identity under the law.
“The goal of the guidance is to assist districts and schools in establishing practices to ensure every child has the opportunity to receive a great education in a setting free from discrimination, harassment and violence. National PTA applauds the Departments of Education and Justice for their responsiveness to requests for guidance as schools strive to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all children.
“Every child deserves to come to school excited to learn in a safe and nurturing environment without the fear of bullying, violence or discrimination. It has long been a top priority of National PTA to make sure all children have a safe, supportive and positive environment in which to thrive and learn. The association remains committed to working with the administration and Congress to strengthen protections for all children and improve education.”
