Since Target opened its doors in 1962, it has given back 5 percent of its income to local communities. This year, Target will give back more than $3 million every week to schools and nonprofit organizations. Target’s programs are national in scope, with local impact across all their focus areas, in arts, education, and social services. This year, Target has joined with PTA in its commitment to promoting and supporting arts and education. Together, Target and PTA will help schools and communities across the country emphasize the importance of the arts as an essential component of a child’s education. |
The arts are an expression of beauty, a mode of self-expression, a means to explore other cultures and viewpoints.
But more than that, the arts are a way to build self-esteem, teach critical skills, and boost student achievement.
Arts education can enhance children’s personal, social, and intellectual development. Unfortunately, however, the arts are far too often overlooked in the school curriculum—and left out altogether when budgets get tight.
PTA Start the Art Week, October 8–12, 2007, is an opportunity to provide your school’s students with arts experiences. It’s also an ideal time to inform families of the benefits of arts education and gain the support of the community. Show your PTA’s commitment to arts education by observing PTA Start the Art Week with a one-day event or a weeklong celebration.
