Proud To Be A PTA Mom!
I am extremely excited and honored as an ambassador for the PTA to blog to so many great parents and moms. Following in the footsteps of my mom, who was an extremely active parent and PTA member, I want to show my daughter, Tessa, how important her education is and the PTA does an amazing job of encouraging other parents to do the same.
Throughout my life, I have held numerous roles: Olympic athlete, model, reporter and corporate spokesperson, but none is more important than Mom. While I have been extremely blessed with athletic talent and success, Tessa gives me more joy than anything. When I come home from a long day of training and she just wants to play “race”, it reminds me my child’s life and my role as a parent takes precedence above all else.
While my ambassadorship with the PTA just started this year with the beginning of Take your Family to School Week, I look forward to many years of growing the ideals the PTA stands for like taking an active role in your child and their education. I look forward to meeting parents from all over the country when I attend the National convention in June, but I want this blog to be a way for me to communicate some of the important things I am doing with the PTA as well as keep all my fans aware of what’s going on in my life.
Last summer when I won 3 Silver Medals in Beijing at my 5th Olympics, I decided to postpone my 3rd retirement as I was swimming as fast as I had ever before even at 41! While 2012 is still far off, I am training as hard as ever for the 2009 World Championships this July and relish the opportunity to represent my country once again.
I spent the time since the Olympics working on my memoir “Age Is Just A Number,” on sale Tuesday, April 7. You can help support the PTA by purchasing the book at www.pta.org/daratorres. While I want to thank all of you who have sent me notes about inspiring you to achieve great things, I hope my book gives everyone more insight into what it takes to achieve your dreams and how things like age can’t be considered obstacles or roadblocks, but motivation itself. You’ll see in my book how important my parents were in my life and despite their divorce, how important it was to me and my four siblings.
I’ll try to post as often as I can and I encourage all of you to post comments as I will try to read each and every one of them.
Thanks!
