ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 3, 2014) — National PTA® is proud to announce that President Otha Thornton has been selected to be a distinguished guest for the 60th annual U.S. Army War College National Security Seminar. Each year, the U.S. Army War College caps its academic program by inviting thought leaders from across the country to discuss national security issues with its students. The National Security Seminar is designed to heighten military officers’ understanding of the society they serve and the interests, issues and trends that influence the formulation of national security policy. The seminar is held the first full week of June at Carlisle Barracks in Carlisle, Pa.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the important work of the U.S. Army War College and to contribute to discussions on national security issues that impact our country’s children and families,” said Otha Thornton, president of National PTA. “At this dynamic time in our nation’s history, it is critical that we work together to protect children and families across the country and help communities grow and prosper. I am thrilled to participate in the National Security Seminar and contribute to the development of our nation’s future strategic leaders.”

The U.S. Army War College is the Army’s center for strategic thought, delivering senior-level education to all armed forces and civilian national strategy professionals. The purpose of the U.S. Army War College is to produce graduates who are skilled critical thinkers and complex problem solvers. The class of 2014 includes 77 international fellows, who are some of the best leaders in their respective militaries and were hand-picked by their nations for a year of study in the U.S.

Established in 1954, the National Security Seminar is a one-week event that creates an environment for U.S. Army War College students and distinguished guests to examine current national security issues and exchange dialogue. The seminar is designed to enhance student learning through exposure to a cross-section of American perspectives. It also provides a forum for distinguished guests to discuss their views on issues of importance to the nation’s security and welfare.

During the seminar, President Thornton will actively participate in discussions with U.S. Army War College students, international fellows and faculty.
