2014 PTA Teacher Appreciation Week to be marked May 5-9
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (May 5, 2014) — Every day in schools across the country, teachers touch the lives of millions of children, and their work and impact extends far beyond the boundaries of the classroom. To honor teachers and the contributions they make, National PTA® has designated the first week of May as PTA Teacher Appreciation Week. During the weeklong celebration, which will be marked this year from May 5 through 9, PTAs nationwide will be conducting a variety of events and activities to recognize and thank teachers for their time and dedication to ensure students’ success.
“This is the one week of the year when teachers take center stage and are recognized for the countless hours they spend to ensure every child reaches his or her full potential, both in school and beyond,” said Otha Thornton, president of National PTA. “The impact teachers have on children’s lives and futures is so valuable. It is important that parents, families and communities celebrate, honor and support teachers during PTA Teacher Appreciation Week and all year round for the role they play in making a difference for the education, health and welfare of children.”
Throughout the week, students, families and PTAs will show appreciation for teachers in a number of ways, including:
- Hosting surprise pep rallies, assemblies and other events;
- Writing and delivering heartfelt letters and cards;
- Creating art work, poems and video messages;
- Decorating schools and teacher’s lounges;
- Volunteering in classrooms; and
- Recognizing teachers with awards.
National PTA has designated the first week of May as PTA Teacher Appreciation Week since 1984. In addition to honoring educators during this week, National PTA also serves on the selection committees for the National Teacher of the Year Program as well as People Magazine’s Teacher of the Year Award.
