National PTA and U.S. Department of Education to Recognize Students From Across the Country for Their Outstanding Works of Art

Event to feature performances and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open exhibit of student artwork

WHAT:

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, National PTA and the U.S. Department of Education will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony in the LBJ Education Building to recognize student artists from across the country and celebrate the opening of an exhibit of their works of art. During the event, U.S. Acting Deputy Secretary of Education Jim Shelton, National PTA President Otha Thornton and the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities Executive Director Rachel Goslins will discuss the significance of the arts, the benefits of arts education and the importance of integrating the arts into STEM. The event also will feature music and dance performances by honorees of the 2012-2013 National PTA Reflections program.

The National PTA Reflections program was developed to encourage students to explore the arts in an educational way. Through the program, National PTA and PTAs across the country urge students in preschool through grade 12 to create and submit original works of art in the medium of their choice— dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography or visual arts — reflecting on a specific theme. Students are recognized each year for their artistic ingenuity to bring the theme to life in a way that is personal and meaningful. For more than 40 years, the National PTA Reflections program has inspired millions of students to be involved in the arts.

All of the artwork that will be on display in the LBJ Education Building was created by participants in the 2012-2013 National PTA Reflections program, themed “The Magic of a Moment.”  The artwork will be on display for public viewing through Feb. 27, 2014.
