Intern Opportunities | National PTA

National PTA, located in Alexandria, Va., is currently accepting applications from college and grad students who wish to serve as unpaid interns at the PTA headquarters for Summer of 2017.

Summer Interns will begin working in May and continue through the First week of August (Dates are Flexible), except where indicated. National PTA staff will assist any students wishing to get college credit for our unpaid internship. Currently, the following internships are available:

Communications Intern - Editorial and Online Magazine Support

Communications Intern - Media Relations and Social Media Support

Education Initiatives & Programs Intern

E-Learning Design Intern

Resource Development and Communications Intern

Communications Intern - Editorial and Online Magazine Support

We are seeking a sophomore or more senior majoring in English, Journalism, Communications or Marketing that is interested in supporting the National PTA’s online magazine, Our Children.

The intern should be willing and able to commit 15 to 20 hours of week of work in our offices in Alexandria, VA.  We do allow flexible schedules and some work from home may be possible.  The intern will be responsible for:

  • Posting articles for Our Children Magazine in World Press.
  • Compiling monthly and quarterly magazine and e-marketing metrics.
  • Help writing and editing articles, promotional copy and website content for various communications projects.
  • Help creating graphics for Our Children Magazine and promotional tasks.
  • Assist with additional communication projects as needed.

Students should gain valuable working knowledge of communications work in a non-profit environment and will be completing project related work to add to their portfolios.

Communications Intern - Media Relations and Social Media Support

The intern will support public relations, media relations and digital communications efforts and gain experience in a non-profit and advocacy environment.

Duties and responsibilities may include the following:

  • Create a bi-weekly report including top education trend and industry news articles.
  • Compile and updated medial lists.
  • Assist writing press releases, media advisories and other materials
  • Assisting with compiling background materials to prepare National PTA leadership for interviews
  • Posting news releases and other media-related content to PTA.org
  • Help write pieces for National PTA’s One Voice blog and Our Children magazine.
  • Help write content and create graphics for National PTA’s social media channels.
  • Assist in compiling monthly and quarterly social medial and e-marketing metrics.

Required experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

Qualified candidates must possess a clear understanding of public and media relations. The intern must demonstrate excellent writing, editing and communication skills. Knowledge of WordPress or any other content management system is a plus. Proficient with MS Office Suite and Google analytics; must have a strong understanding of social media sites.

Preferred college majors: communications, journalism, marketing or public relations

Students should gain valuable working knowledge of communications work in a non-profit environment and will be completing project related work to add to their portfolios.

Education Initiatives & Programs Intern

The education initiatives & programs intern will assist in research and materials development for National PTA’s STEM Plus Families initiative and deployment of STEM grant opportunities. The intern will support PTA’s literacy program, PTA Family Reading Experience, and signature program School of Excellence. The typical day will include writing content for articles, blogs or web content, answering questions from the field, and supporting grant/awards management needs. The intern will walk away with a portfolio that demonstrates skills gained in project management, public relations/marketing, education issues, and national program design and execution.

Duties and responsibilities may include the following:

  • Assisting in research and development of National PTA’s STEM Initiative and deployment of STEM grant opportunities
  • Providing technical assistance to all education program members as needed
  • Updating content and videos on the program website pages

Required experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

Qualified candidates must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and content management systems, strong understanding of social media. Effective verbal and written skills required. Must be able to multitask to support several programs and initiatives and provide excellent customer service to our members.

Preferred college majors: English, Communications, Education, STEM or Humanities

E-Learning Design Intern

The E-Learning Design intern will report to the E-Learning Manager and Director of Education and will be exposed to the entire life-cycle of online learning design and development. The intern will work with the E-Learning Manager to gain an understanding of online education and how it works within the non-profit industry.

Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills, including written, oral, and listening.
  • Computer software competency, particularly with Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Articulate Storyline)
  • Ability to work independently and track milestones and meet project quality expectations
  • Willingness to learn new designer software such as: Photoshop CS6 and Articulate Storyline Suite
  • Awareness of a variety of design and development tools such as Adobe Captivate, Dreamweaver, Flash, and HTML
  • Must be able to draft and execute communication strategies and action plans
  • Working towards a degree in Instructional Design, Education, or Communications is preferred.
  • Must be able to multitask to support several programs and initiatives and provide excellent customer service to our members.

Preferred college majors: accounting and STEM majors would be best suited for the position. However, any college major is invited to apply.

Resource Development and Communications Intern

The intern will provide support to the Resource Development and Communications departments.

Duties and responsibilities may include the following:

  • Coordinating donor acknowledgement
  • Managing collection of brick fundraising campaign inscriptions
  • Drafting donor correspondence and solicitations
  • Assisting with script writing
  • Providing production assistance for photo and video shoots

Required experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:

Qualified candidates must possess strong Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and writing skills. Video production skills a plus but not required.

Preferred college majors: English, Marketing, or Communications.
