102: The Parent as Coach! Five Strategies to Help Your Children Succeed in School and Life!

This highly interactive workshop will help attendees establish effective strategies, as Parent Coaches™, to help their children establish daily habits that produce academic and life success. Darrell "Coach D" Andrews, a featured speaker at the 2006 National PTA Convention and Exhibition in Phoenix, as well as the 2006 National PTA Media Day in NYC, will share tried and true principles, strategies and insights. Parents and school leaders will walk away with information that can be immediately implemented in their homes and schools In order for parents to effectively motivate their children in a day and age where peer pressure and negative images on television and in music, parents need to be strategic, just like a coach on a sport team. Victorious coaches have a plan of action and so should parents who expect to win! We will work together as a large "Dream Team" to make this happen for all in attendance. This will be a life and school-changing workshop for all who attend.

103: Mapping The Madness: Planning Effective Action Plans for Family Engagement

Many family engagement plans are best described as random acts of family engagement and are usually not linked to student achievement or school improvement. As a result, many families do not participate and program planners feel unappreciated. Successful family engagement programs are sustained, coordinated, and thoughtfully planned. This session will help participants learn to plan year-long programs based on the needs of the student, their families, and their school. Participants will learn the latest research about the effectiveness of implementing sustained programs and effective family engagement practices. They will discover key strategies that result in coordinated year-long programs. They will learn how to utilize school improvement plans to design programs likely to have a positive effect on student achievement and school improvement. They will learn to define and articulate their own program goals and develop a coordinated plan of action. During the session, participants will learn five secret strategies to success.

106: Financial Planning—15 Financial Myths Demystified

This workshop will look at financial issues facing families and will debunk persistent myths. Participants will learn about investing, insurance, , and estate planning, and general financial planning. In addition, attendees will learn how to balance immediate and long–term goals-from financing a child’s education to building retirement funds.

107: Embracing Youth Involvement in PTA!

A member of PTA is one that aims to be a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child. Time and time again youth are forgotten in the mix of serving as such an individual in our PTA association. Methods on getting youth involved on all levels of PTA will be addressed as well as how to use these youth members to their fullest potential. This workshop will allow for individuals to learn about or more about how youth involvement can benefit any local, council, region, or state PTA. Best practices and resources will be shared from members of the National PTA Youth Involvement Committee and the audience will be opened to share their history in the amazingness that is Youth Involvement. The National PTA Youth Involvement Committee will aid the attendees in how to collaborate and co-pilot successful youth involvement measures all throughout PTA.

108: How to Work Efficiently and Effectively in Committees

In this interactive session participants will learn, share, and discuss the skills and techniques needed to ensure their committee is more than a committee of one This session will combine development, team-building, communications, motivation, and planning. Participants will learn, through group activities, to efficiently use the Plan of Work, effectively identify goals, and understand the importance of maintaining a Procedure Book. Our discussions will focus on time management in committee meetings, identifying barriers and solutions that may keep committees from succeeding, and share ways of recognizing and motivating committee members.

As family advocates and PTA leaders, it is critical to keep in mind one important element; many parents from diverse or underrepresented groups are not familiar with the concept of “family engagement”. They struggle to understand their role as parent advocates in their child’s education. All too often, these parents are perceived as uninvolved and/or not caring about their child’s education. However, the reality is that many parents simply lack knowledge or an understanding of what is required of them as it relates to family engagement. This workshop will provide an overview of how cultural and beliefs impact parental engagement. Attendees will participate in hands on activities and receive strategies that can lead to effective outreach and participation of diverse and underrepresented families.

204: PTA Communication in the Digital Age

Effective communication is essential to the success of a PTA. The world we live in today requires us as leaders to use a variety of methods of communication in order to keep our members engaged. This workshop will provide attendees practical ideas they can use in their units to increase and sustain members, increase volunteer participation and build pride in their local unit, council, and PTA as a whole. 205—Partnering Together Through and For the Arts!

Learn how parents, teachers, artists, administrators, arts organizations, and state arts agencies can work together to establish and build a long-term partnership designed to educate and motivate students while fostering positive group dynamics through whole-school arts initiatives! Partnership strategies include working closely with students to facilitate the discovery of hidden talents and develop new strengths while connecting to and drawing inspiration from teachers, administrators, and parents who recognize the value of the arts in youth development. The arts emphasize both process and product, setting students up for success by providing clear, sequential instruction and an infinite amount of insight and flexibility that encourages questions, taking creative risks, and learning from mistakes. 206: Transitioning from Head Start to PTA: Charting a Course to Success

Research shows that when children and families receive the support they need in the preschool-to-elementary school transition, parents are more likely to become involved in their children’s education—at home, at school, and in the community. The National PTA and the National Head Start Association (NHSA) have created a partnership to help bridge the gap between local Head Start programs and PTAs and help parents of children in early education successfully transition into the K-12 school system. This session will provide an overview of transition issues, the role PTAs can play in assisting Head Starts in helping families to navigate that transition. Staff from both organizations will also provide information on the national partnership and how that impacts state and local units. They will discuss the development and implementation of strategies and tools that will facilitate greater participation between the PTA and Head Starts at every level.

303: PTA Family Reading Experience, Powered by Kindle—NEW PTA Program!

National PTA and Amazon Kindle have teamed up to develop a new program available to local units called the PTA Family Reading Experience, Powered by Kindle. The program is designed to be easy for PTAs to implement events within their schools and to help teach strategies to parents and other adults for participating in their children’s reading process, with the goals of improving their children’s reading comprehension and motivation. The activities focus on improving the reading skills of children between kindergarten and fifth grade. This workshop session will include an actual demonstration of the activities. Participants will experience the activities and learn how they can host the PTA Family Reading Experience, Powered by Kindle at their own school.

304: Home is Where the Military Sends Us: How PTA's can Help Military Families

A military-connected mom and PTA leader shares her experiences with you about how to reach families in your community that have a member serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Ideas for individual outreach, as well as community-wide initiatives will be presented. You will brainstorm ideas to help identify military-connected families in your school, in addition to discussing a basic overview of military culture, terms, how to engage military leaders, and why the Common Core State Standards and the Military Children's Interstate Compact are vitally important to military families. 307: MADD’s Underage Drinking Prevention Initiative

Join us for this exciting and informative workshop session and find out how your local PTA can utilize MADD's underage drinking prevention programs. Whether you are a parent, school advisor, counselor, or even a youth, you will discover what you can do in your school, home, and community to prevent underage drinking and will receive sample program materials. This 75-minute session will begin with an introduction to MADD’s overall underage drinking prevention initiative, developed with environmental strategies, that includes Power of Parents, Power of You(th), and Power of Community programs. MADD's will also present a 30- minute parent workshop, an integral part of its’ community-based parent program that can be implemented in your community, equipping parents with research-based tools to talk with their teens about alcohol. 402: Advocating for Improved Nutrition in Schools

Since its founding, PTA has been advocating for the nutritional needs of children. Today, child nutrition continues to be a top public policy priority for PTA. Join National PTA Government Affairs staff and the Kids’ Safe and Healthful Foods Project for this comprehensive workshop, which outlines PTA’s public policy priorities on child nutrition and provides the latest findings in public opinion, school food environments and student health research. Workshop attendees will have the opportunity to discuss challenges they face in their own schools and communities and will leave with resources and skills to better advocate for improved school nutrition environments in their states and schools. 404: Supporting 21st Century Learning in Schools and Communities

Parents play an essential role in supporting 21st century learning in their schools and communities. But not all parents are aware of what 21st century skills are, and why they are important. Dr. Helen Soulé, of the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) will provide an overview of P21’s comprehensive Framework for 21st Century Learning, focusing on the 4C’s of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking, and creativity and innovation. Dr. Soulé will explain P21’s work with state and local stakeholders and will discuss the significant role that parents can play in ensuring that students graduate with the skills they need to succeed in education, work and life. The Partnership for 21st Century Skills (P21) is the leading national advocate for 21st century readiness for every student, bringing together education, business, and nonprofit organizations, as well as state and federal policymakers to prepare students for college, career, and citizenship.

405: How to Establish an Effective School Wellness Team

The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 requires school districts that participate in the National School Lunch and/or School Breakfast Program to have a local school wellness policy that promotes student health and addresses childhood obesity. Through this mechanism the school community, including parents, can participate significantly in improving the school food and physical activity environment. It is a great time for schools to review and update their wellness policies! Competing priorities and differing perspectives can present challenges to even the most committed wellness teams. This workshop will take participants through the process of building a school wellness team and tackling some of the more difficult issues that can face a wellness committee. The example of managing marketing of unhealthy foods to children in schools is used to illustrate strategies for navigating divisive issues within the team. The panel includes experts in school-based research, advocacy, and legal issues.

406: Unleashing the Power of Excellent Schools

Today’s PTA is focused on excellence. The excellence that is threaded throughout our remarkable history of parents and teachers who boldly pursued and achieved the change they wanted to see in schools. More than a century later, our focus on the path to excellence has never been stronger. Great schools are not just about test scores—PTA is focused on enriching the overall educational experience. The National PTA School of Excellence is a new program to help PTAs enrich the educational experience and overall well-being of every child. Participants learn how to bring this exciting new program to their own schools. They will learn how the program will help local PTAs work with other school leaders to identify priorities for improving their schools through effective family engagement.

502 - Are You Doing the Right Things to Make Parents Partners in Learning?

Are parents welcome in your building? If not, it is likely they will not feel welcome in the learning process! A stroll through your school to see what is on the walls is the first step in determining how welcome parents may feel. A review of the physical surroundings is also a metaphor for understanding how effectively your school welcomes parents in learning process. Participants in this session will learn how to make a school's physical environment the starting point for effective parent engagement. In addition, participants will receive information on how to more efficiently use their website, parent handouts, and parent meetings to motivate parents to become active participants in their child's learning. Schools cannot maximize student learning without harnessing the power of parent involvement. The first step on the road to success is to truly welcome parents as partners.

503: It's Elementary, Dear Watson...or...Understanding the Basics of Parliamentary Procedures

Remember when your Mom or Dad said “…because I said so!” or you heard a coach say to your kid “..because that’s the rules-I didn’t make ‘em, I just make sure it’s done the way it’s supposed to be done.” Fast forward into your PTA career and you have probably heard the same replies from other PTA leaders when you wanted to do something in a meeting you felt was important, or you just wanted to conduct the meeting in an orderly fashion so no one gets their feelings hurt. Fortunately, PTA is governed by some rules: Robert’s Rules, more commonly referred to as parliamentary procedures. In this round table discussion participants will learn the basics. There will be plenty of opportunity asks questions and have their needs met at this session. 504: How State Arts Agencies Can Assist Your PTA

How to work with your state arts agency (SAA). Every SAA has an education program. They vary state-to-state but all of them have resources to enhance the efforts of local, regional and state PTA’s. Often, matching funds are available to support visiting artist programs that bring practicing professional teaching artists into the classroom. Many support artist residencies, arts integration, evaluation of school arts education programs, as well as research. Local PTAs can extend their funding by applying for additional support from the SAA. SAAs are powerfully connected to artists and arts organizations through the state. They can assist and advise in finding local resources and connecting PTAs to organizations that offer education programs. SAAs can recommend model programs within and outside the state. SAAs adjudicate programs and can recommend experts and artists to assist with Reflections programs at the state and local level.
