    Editorial Manager

    The nation's largest child advocacy association, National PTA, currently has an opening for an Editorial Manager located in Alexandria, Virginia. The Editorial Manager oversees the development and delivery of the association’s editorial publications. The position is directly responsible for the production and promotion related to the Our Children magazine, annual report and editorial style guide. The position also will supervise executive communications and other writing and editing tasks related to National PTA publications. In this role, the Editorial Manager will manage one employee and several vendors.

    The essential duties and responsibilities of the Editorial Manager will include but not limited to:

    • Produce Our Children magazine and related promotions, which includes:
      • Developing and managing an editorial calendar
      • Researching, interviewing, writing and editing all content
      • Sourcing artwork
      • Coordinating translation, design, printing, online posting and delivery
      • Managing the subscription process, including responding to subscriber questions and needs
      • Tracking and fulfilling advertising commitments
      • Generating strategies to improve subscriptions and advertising-related revenue
      • Writing, editing and designing e-blasts to launch and market each edition
      • Evaluating readership and reactions
    • Produce the National PTA annual report, which includes:
      • Developing a creative brief and content outline in collaboration with National PTA executives and leadership volunteers
      • Researching, writing and editing all content
      • Sourcing artwork
      • Coordinating translation, design, printing, online posting and delivery
      • Developing and coordinating the execution of a communications plan to ensure the report is accessible to various audiences, including members, leaders, policymakers, partners, sponsors and other stakeholders
    • Develop and disseminate an editorial style guide for staff use
    • Identify opportunities for National PTA to submit articles to external publications, excluding media, and write, edit and deliver the submissions
    • Perform other duties, as assigned
    • Supervise Editorial Specialist and manage vendors
    • Liaise with subject-matter experts to ensure the accuracy of content and with graphic designers to improve the presentation of information
    • Follow organizational processes for preparation and approval of materials

    Education and Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, marketing, public policy or related field is required
    • Minimum 7 years of professional experience as a writer or editor
    • Previous experience managing the production of a periodical
    • Previous experience managing vendors and employees
    • Previous experience working with executives and leadership volunteers

    Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Superior writing and editing skills
    • Excellent interviewing and research skills
    • Proficient in Chicago and/or AP writing styles
    • Demonstrated tact and success in working with executives and leadership volunteers
    • Proven record of developing relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions
    • Able to juggle multiple demands, manage shifting priorities and meet deadlines
    • Familiar with education, health, parenting and/or advocacy-related terminology and concepts
    • Advanced skills in MS Office
