Premier National Sponsor Message

Unilever, a Premier National Sponsor of National PTA®, has assembled a team of experts as part of its "Don't Fret the Sweat" campaign to provide advice for parents to help their tweens build confidence and navigate those sweat-inducing moments. Renowned parenting educator and author of Queen Bees and Wannabes, Rosalind Wiseman, offers these guidelines on how to have a direct and respectful conversation with your tween about those not-so-sweet smells.

  1. Respect their privacy. Don't ever say anything around their friends or in any public place. Ever.

  2. Know your child. If they are sensitive about the issue, use a less direct approach. For example, "Now that you're older and more mature, it's good for you to take more responsibility for these things."

  3. Give them a say. Ask them if they want to go to the store with you to buy deodorant or other personal hygiene products or if they want you to do it. If they want you to do it, casually tell them what you bought and where they can find the items.

Remember, although it can be uncomfortable to talk about these things with your children, it's a great opportunity to set the groundwork for good communication.
