National PTA and Facebook:
Partnering Together to Keep Kids Safe Online

National PTA and Facebook are partnering together to help educate parents and children to be effective digital citizens and make smart decisions online.

As the availability and accessibility to the Internet increases, data shows that students are spending more and more time online. A recent study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that students are spending over 8.5 hours accessing media content per day. In addition, students' accessibility to the Internet has improved significantly as well, with an increase (from 73% to 86%) of students who have a computer at home, students who have two or more computers at home (25%to 39%), have Internet access at home (47% to 74%), and go online for more than an hour in any given day (5% to 22%).

Given the increasing amount of time that children and youth are spending online, it is imperative that parents and families are prepared to help their children use the Internet wisely and ensure that they are safe online.

Through this partnership, PTA and Facebook will be providing information, tools and resources to encourage safe and responsible Internet use for all kids, parents, and teachers. Together, PTA and Facebook are working to:

  1. Share the most credible information to encourage kids and families to be responsible digital citizens, reduce cyberbullying and advance Internet safety.
  2. Raise awareness of available resources.
  3. Close the generational gap by providing access to information about safe and responsible Internet use for parents and families.
As the partnership develops, PTA and Facebook will work to create an online source for parents and families to find a comprehensive set of tools and resources to promote safe and responsible Internet use. On this site, parents and families will find advice from experts in the field and interactive resources so that kids, parents and teachers can actively engage and shape the conversation around responsible and safe online citizenship.
