National PTA Supports President Obama’s Prepared Remarks
for Back to School

Chicago (September 7, 2009)–National PTA commends President Barack Obama for taking time tomorrow to inspire America's students about education. PTA supports the messages in the recently released remarks that the President will deliver as the nation’s students begin a new school year.

National PTA believes it is positive any time a U.S. President speaks directly to students about the responsibility they have for their education and to their families, their country and themselves.  As an association that includes over 60,000 student members, PTA believes that it is relevant and encouraging for America’s students to hear examples of how other children like them, and even the President himself, overcame the odds to pursue higher education.

National PTA also supports the President’s remarks regarding the strong role that parents and families can play in supporting their child’s education.  Parents can help their child set goals, stay on track, and meet their desired outcomes.

For more than a century, PTA and its millions of members have taken action for children, so that they all have access to a safe and challenging learning environment. PTA believes these efforts are critical, but it is equally important for children to know, as President Obama will remind them; “…none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.”
