Let’s Fight Flu Together!

PTA, Novartis Vaccines, and Flu Busters have joined together to fight the spread of influenza through a program designed to educate, motivate, and vaccinate children, families, school staff, and other members of the community—Let’s Fight Flu Together!

Every year, children miss an estimated 38 million school days due to influenza and its complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual influenza vaccinations for nearly all children age 6 months through their 19th birthday.

PTAs across the nation can take an active role in keeping their schools and communities healthy during the flu season by hosting an influenza vaccination clinic.

Flu vaccination clinics can take place October through January at your school or a community facility. Flu Busters provides the nurses and assumes all insurance liability. Register your school now and encourage families to go online and register for their vaccinations. Vaccinations are $25 for pre-registered, $27 onsite, and $30 for Flu Mist, a non-injectable vaccine.

For more information on the initiative and to register your PTA, go to www.pta.org/flushotclinics or contact Annie Krysl, Outreach Manager, at akrysl@pta.org. Let’s keep all of our schools healthy this year. Let’s Fight Flu Together!

Member Discount Programs

PTA makes it easy for its members to save money on products and services for their homes, schools, and PTA units. National PTA has established relationships with select PTA National Member Benefits Providers to provide exclusive discounts to members with valid membership cards and numbers.

Members can receive substantial discounts on items such as LCD TVs, vacation packages, auto and home insurance, cellphone plans, and more. Providers must go through a screening process and are chosen based on their reliability, usefulness, and appeal to PTA’s members. PTA National Member Benefits Providers are identified by the symbol at the right so that PTA members can take advantage of offered discounts. In addition, select PTA National Member Benefits Providers also offer fundraising programs especially for local units.

PTA members can also purchase a PTA Rewards Card to receive dining and entertainment discounts. In addition, there is a PTA Credit Card for individuals who want their everyday spending to benefit PTA. To learn more about these benefits of membership, visit PTA.org/benefits.

Partnerships and Strategic Alliances

PTA’s national organization creates partnerships and strategic alliances to support PTA’s mission, enhance programs, and advance key priorities. These partnerships and alliances often have national, state and local impact. Many partnerships increase the quality and depth of PTA’s programs. In addition, others assist PTA in being a relevant and reliable resource for parents by sharing timely information with PTA members.

PTA has partnered with a number nonprofit organizations and government agencies. For example, PTA is working with

• Action for Healthy Kids to promote healthy lifestyles;
• Reading is Fundamental and Scholastic to promote and encourage family literacy by distributing free books to students; and
• Mexican American Legal Defense & Education Fund (MALDEF) to provide training to parents in urban communities.

PTA’s alliances involve two or more organizations that work together to reach a common goal. The PTA MOREsm(Men Organized to Raise Engagement) Alliance is working collaboratively to encourage more fathers to become involved with their child’s education.

PTA MORE
Men Organized to Raise Engagement
PTA’s Men Organized to Raise Engagement (MORE) alliance combines the strength of nine organizations to provide ways for men to become more engaged in their children’s lives and education. MORE partners offer training opportunities, programs, services, and products focused on helping produce greater, more effective male involvement. Children, schools, and communities thrive when both men and women are engaged in helping the children in their lives succeed.   PTA MORE helps PTA leaders and units • Develop programs that engage fathers and other men with childcare responsibilities in PTA or other school activities,
• Recruit and train male leaders to work with fathers and male role models to enhance positive male parenting and involvement with youth,
• Act as a resource for families, communities, and schools on fatherhood initiatives and issues, and
• Make the quality programming of alliance members available to PTA members.
MORE brochures in English and Spanish are available for download from the MORE website. Website visitors will also find a calendar of male-involvement events being held by alliance. More information, including alliance member descriptions and contact information, can be found at PTA.org/MORE.

PTA National Ambassadors

PTA counts on its millions of members to create a powerful voice for all children, and with the help of its National Ambassadors, such as international recording artist CeCe Peniston and NFL linebacker Chris Draft, the organization’s voice is stronger.

PTA National Ambassadors—many of whom are celebrities and prominent public figures—use their talents, expertise, and influence to increase awareness of the importance of parent involvement in children’s educational success, promote PTA as a relevant resource for families and school communities, and shine a national spotlight on PTA’s valuable work and dedicated volunteers.

Over the decades community leaders, entertainers, actors, legislators, and U.S. Presidents have lent their voices to PTA to make a difference for all children. These prominent child advocates have included the following:

• Country band Alabama
• Businesswoman and former sportcaster Phyllis George
The Cosby Show stars Tempestt Bledsoe and Malcolm Jamal Warner
• Olympic figure skater Peggy Fleming
• Actor Clifton Davis
• Children’s TV host Fred Rogers
• Journalist Linda Ellerbee
• Model and businesswomen Kathy Ireland
