Teaching Children to Go the Extra Mile

Tips for positioning your child to succeed

Successful people go the extra mile. Teaching your children the concept of going the extra mile from early age can help put them ahead in the game of life, according to Terri Khonsari, author of Raising A Superstar: Simple Strategies to Bring Out the Brilliance in Every Child. Khonsari shares a strategy for teaching kids to go the extra mile without burdening them with expectations.

Going the extra mile will make your child stand out from the crowd because of his or her special efforts. You will teach your child to not give up even in the most difficult times. You will prepare them for challenges and you will train them to be pleasant adults.

By teaching your children to go the extra mile you will help them feel good about themselves in school and among their peers as well as teachers and coaches. You will help them succeed in their personal and professional lives later on. Most importantly you will help them grow to responsible adults and not those who just do the "JOB" to be done with it!

It is our job as parents and educators to teach our children the concept of going the extra mile and teach them to do it with passion! It is such an easy thing to do if you have the right attitude.

Start with yourself and show your children how YOU exceed expectations! Surprise people around you – at work and at home – with more than they are expecting from you! Look for new and creative ways; look for fun ways to go the extra mile and share these with your children.

Let your children know how people notice those who work hard and have special attention to make others feel good about themselves. In every success story there is someone who worked hard and went the extra mile to achieve what they wanted. Point this out to your kids – how a successful person can make a difference when they do that one extra thing.

Show your children that going the extra mile always pays off and share real life stories with them. Show how finishing the assignment is good – but copying it over in neat handwriting to turn in is great! The little extra things show commitment and responsibility.

Acknowledge their effort when they do go the extra mile and boost their confidence. When they add the floral arrangement when setting the dinner table, take notice and offer praise and recognition! Help your children grow to be strong and pleasant adults who routinely go above and beyond.

When your children go the extra mile, they will get noticed; people will see that they pay attention to specifics, that they are considerate and that they care. You will make your children more attractive to the world.

Teach your children to always do the best they can do and be the best they can be in every situation. Teach them to overcome obstacles and solve problems that arise along the way instead of giving up, and you will raise extraordinary, responsible, and successful adults.

Always remember that going the extra mile is rewarding!
