PTA Applauds Obama’s Take on Education

3/11/2009

Washington, DC (March 11, 2009) – On the day that hundreds of PTA leaders and members convene in the nation’s capital to speak up on behalf of children, America’s largest and oldest parent volunteer organization praises President Barack Obama’s pledge to overhaul the education system.

“It is evident that the first family understands the important role that parents and families play in improving education,” said Jan Harp Domene, PTA national president. For decades, PTA has advocated for increased parent involvement and community engagement in children’s education, which research shows significantly raises student achievement, regardless of the parent’s education level, socioeconomic status or ethnicity.

“It is imperative that the President and the U.S. Department of Education continue to give parents the tools they need to be effective in supporting their students’ education, including increasing funding for Parental Information and Resource Centers and strengthening parent involvement provisions in No Child Left Behind.”

Since its inception in 1897, National PTA has organized millions of parents, caregivers, teachers, and community and business leaders, to ensure all children have access to high-quality education no matter where they live.

“In his remarks, the President calls for a longer school day and school year. National PTA encourages the President and U.S. Department of Education to include parents and families as a part of these critical conversations, on a local and national level,” said Byron V. Garrett, PTA national CEO. “It is vital that parents remain involved in decisions that have a significant impact on students’ lives, which in turn, can positively affect the future of America’s economy and status as a global leader.

“National PTA welcomes the opportunity to work side by side with the President and his education team as we have for many other administrations to address these issues and turn his vision into reality.”
