PTA National President Named Americana ‘Woman of the Year’

CHICAGO (November 24, 2008) - PTA national president Jan Harp Domene has been named 2009 Americana "Woman of the Year" by Cypress College. Domene will receive the award—one of Orange County’s most prestigious—at the Americana Awards Dinner scheduled for February 28, 2009, in the Disneyland Hotel’s Grand Ballroom. Among those honored in the past are Gene Autry, Carl Karcher, Marion Knott, Bishop Jamie Soto, Vince Ferragamo, Mark Chapin Johnson, and Bill Medley (formerly of the Righteous Brothers). Approximately 600 guests are expected to attend.

Being honored as "Man of the Year" is California State Senator Jack Scott. Senator Scott is the incoming statewide chancellor of the California community college system. While Domene heads up an organization of more than 5 million parents and teachers (including 155,000 from Orange County), Scott will oversee the 110 California community colleges—the largest system of higher education in the world.

Domene resides in Anaheim and is the mother of three, and is being recognized for her 32 years of PTA service as well as for her participation with numerous other organizations, including: the Red Cross, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Special Olympics, the Prevention of Youth Violence Task Force, youth sports and Cheer.

Local PTA organizations interested in congratulating or otherwise recognizing Jan as "Woman of the Year" can do so in three ways. Those who are local can attend the February 28 event—tickets are $225 per person, with tables of ten ranging from $2,250 to $3,500. Program ads are also available in which congratulations can be offered: a quarter-page ad is $175, half-page is $300, and a full page ad is $550. Or, local PTAs may choose instead to donate to the "Jan Harp Domene Student Textbook Fund" being established at Cypress College in her name; PTAs contributing $50 and above will be listed in the program. The print deadline for donors and ad sponsors is February 1, 2009.Cypress College, located in the Southern California city of Cypress, serves 15,000 students and maintains exceptional teaching faculty. It's proud of the many excellent academic and vocational programs, offering 58 university-transfer majors, 141 career-certificate programs, and degrees in 51 areas of study.
